The 2017 Big 50 winners are featured in the September issue of Remodeling magazine. Each year since 1986, 50 owners of remodeling companies are inducted into Remodeling’s Big 50, and today there are over 1,000 proud members. Big 50 remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising industry standards. To be considered, remodeling companies must meet industry standards of operating excellence and meet certain financial benchmarks, yet Big 50 winners are not chosen based on size, revenue, number of jobs, or firm type. The nominations primarily come from Remodeling magazine’s editors and columnists, however, Remodelers Advantage, NARI, and the NAHB Remodelers Council can also suggest candidates. Additionally, Remodeling magazine considers remodeling companies that have consulted on articles, been part of Remodeling 550, or who have corresponded with Remodeling magainze on social media. Their net is cast far and wide for contenders, resulting in more than 200 entries to be evaluated. The strongest candidates are those nominated by more than one source and who receive compelling recommendations by their peers. The industry at large can adopt stronger business practices by observing the examples set by the Big 50. The Big 50 selection process has become increasingly rigorous in recent years, resulting in stronger classes each year.
Many of the 2017 winners showed incredible adaptability in their business practices and offered superior customer service. Another common theme among this year’s class was the employee engagement in improving company processes. Big 50 winners employ innovative marketing techniques, building new websites to enhance prospective clients’ experience with the sites’ form and function. The industry’s best and brightest are selected to become Big 50 members – business owners who have embraced new technologies to grow their customer base and enhance operations.
